Two countries & Two weddings

Barbara + Mike

When a couple are from different countries, and live on the other side of the world, where do you hold the wedding? Barbara, from Ireland, and Mike, from Scotland, are both now Kiwi citizens and have made their home in Wellington. They decided to have two Weddings, one in Ireland, and the second in New Zealand.

Barbara wore the same gown for both weddings, the Sottero & Midgely Taiya, with the Taiya Jacket. As the Kiwi wedding was less formal, she removed the train and hoop.

I decided to remove the train from the dress for the Kiwi wedding. It was going to be a much more casual and vibrant affair, full of jollity and good times, so having the train wasn’t really appropriate. The Irish wedding was a lot more traditional so the formality of the train fitted in nicely.

I loved my dress. It was so beautiful, beautifully made, and beautifully comfortable.

Mike wore his full Queen’s Own Highlanders regimental attire with a kilt in MacKenzie tartan. For the Kiwi wedding he again wore his full regimental attire but this time with the Cameron tartan kilt.

We had a beautiful moment in both ceremonies where Mike wrapped me in a bridal korowai, symbolising his protection of me for our lives together. It was a wonderfully rich and emotional moment and one that many people spoke about fondly. The korowai suited the dress beautifully, so much so that people who didn’t see the ceremony thought that it was actually part of the dress.

Barbara + Mike not only incorporated gorgeous korowai into the ceremony, they also found other ways to honor their adoptive country as well as their homelands. The flowers feature the Thistle - National Flower of Scotland, and the table settings used a small kete, wrapped in a Scottish tartan.

I am so pleased that we decided to hold two events, one in Ireland and one in New Zealand. It means that we were able to celebrate with all our family and all our friends, nobody missed out due to travel or expense, and I was able to put what I learnt organising the Irish wedding to good use in the second one! I wish I could get married a few times :oD
